The last Plextor built Plextor was the 755. All the others since then are just rebadges.

Samsung make some good kit (there 20x were killer good) but TBH the quality of ALL the 22x are lacking when compared to the 20x's. My first inclination would be to find some of the older 20X samungs, or Pioneers. BUT I dont really like any of the 22s ;)

What about Sony Optiarc AD-7241s? This model uses the NEC chipset.
