Seagate 7200.12 1Tb in Vantec non fan enclosure? Good or bad?

Was wondering having the Seagate 7200.12 1TB in a Vantec non fan enclosure a good or bad idea? I dont think they run to hot seeing the reviews.

i have a 320gb in a vantec(metal) and it gets extremely hot the black plastic on the hdd has started to melt on it...

If you plan on using the enclosure only for brief periods of time, it'll be fine. If you want to have it on all the time or for extended time periods, you should use an actively-cooled enclosure.

Dashock: tbh i started using my enclosures without the outer cover,, heck i dont even screw them in anymore ...slide em in and out when i need to change drives

Good idea well i do not want a fan one because i like the noiseless operation but i wont be using it for long periods of time just 3-5 hours max.

but Akg answered ma pm and said it was fine and since i had a 500gb in it previous it did run in the 40s, i think itll be fine.

Or you can use that. I found it pretty great if you have ton's of disk laying on the desk.

Honestly have just 1 cause the other one will be in the Antec Mx-1 next to the tele that running most of the time. So id rather not buy another external enclosure if i do not need it. But i did look at that i liked it but i prefer not having my hard drives exposed - got to many little cousins.

I have a friend who only buys vantec and he's killed lots of drives because of it. jmo but vantec suck

jay51 December 26, 2009 11:05 AM

i will get some pics of my drives that have started melting in the vantec enclosure the 320 and a 500 ...then you can see just how hot there getting...
ps. the 320 was 24hr running on a pvr
