For 24/7 use yeah you need either WD greens or active cooling. If the enclosure is plastic its going to run hot.
IF its a metal enclosure it will act as a big arsed heatsink. This is why I prefer metal enclosures.

I've run many Seagate's in passive enclosures and on average they lasted as long as active cooled Seagates. TBH, as long as the temps stay below 50 or so, it shouldnt matter that much on life expectancy. Hell with externals Ive seen more die from being bumped, dropped, etc while running then "burning to death".

Would a 7200.12 be my first choice...no, WD Greens are much better, but .12s dont run as hot as the old Maxtors (which I used in a external till it got knocked off the table and died)!

Is Vantec my first choice for enclosures....no there are better out there but their metal ones are decent.

YMMV ;)

unless you need them to run 24/7 i suggest you get thermaltake blacx or something similar. jmo ( problem with the vantec is there fine until you start stacking them which most people do then the temps go through the roof) I know why would you stack them i wouldn't but people do all the time.

You start stacking passive enclosures on top of each other....of course they are going to run hot! :)~
It goes without saying that you dont even let them touch each other. Doing otherwise is a recipe for disaster irregardless of the mfg'er of the enclosure.

Nothing wrong with those drives, I just prefer the Greens. Have had great experiences with Greens. Greens are the epitome of Cool, quiet, efficient. Everything I want in a external drive. ;)

Gingerbee, yeah its nice to see a HDD mfg'er enter the 21st century .....and now EVERYONE will part take in the "joy" of misaligned partitions. Another nail in the XP coffin. Though TBH aligning a partition takes almost no time.

The boost in size is a nice bonus....BUT it will be interesting to see how much boost in performance (or loss) this gives. My hunch is writing in 4k blocks may result in a net loss of performance....or atleast until WD gets a handle on this new "tech".

To me WD Greens are dead silent. Only time I've ever heard a peep from a green was when it was a brand new bad drive. ALL drives are more nosiy when in an external enclosure....hell a WD BLUE sounds like its growling if you are close enough to it! I've had Seagates which sounded louder than a Raptor when in enclosures. Passive / silent enclosure is basically a big arse heatsink....AND a sound amplifier. :)~

With that being said....IF you have had good experiences with Seagate but havent used WD....stick with Seagate. Peace of mind is priceless and there is not THAT much of a dif between 'em.
(I'm mfg'er agnostic when it comes to HDD's so I have no real preference). ;)

been reading reviews since morning and people say the WD runs cooler then the LP because of the platter density of the WD.
