500GB HDD... WD or Seagate?
Western Digital 500GB Caviar Black ($55),
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB ($49).

I would go with the WD but then i've had about 6 seagates bug out on me so that might swing my vote :haha:

Ya, I always get WD now, Seagate has failed way too many times to keep giving them money.

Get the 7200.12's. They're single platter and run really cool. Nothing wrong with Seagate's 12 series HDDs.

Reviews on the Seagate show mixed performance... some tests it does well, others it doesn't.

Get a Samsung F3 instead if you can find one. If not, I would go with the WD.

Here's some benchmark results on the Seagate...

Can't read that review cause I'm at work and it's being blocked but the WD black may give a a SLIGHT performance increase but it will be minimal. And I guess the Black has 5 years warranty. Whichever one you choose is a good choice, but the Seagate will run quieter and cooler.

Bingo headshot.. you said it.. WD Blacks have a slight advantage..

Although there's nothing wrong with Seagates, great drives.. The problems started in their 640gb drives.. failure rates, hardly heard an issue with their 500gbs..

You know you could spend $10 bucks more and get 140gb more.. NCIX.com - Buy Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 7200RPM 32MB Dual Proc 3.5IN SATA Hard Drive OEM 5YR Mfg Warranty - WD6401AALS In Canada.

It's a good deal, plus it's a WD Black.. great drive really.. I have the non-black 640gb version, and I'm fairly impressed with my WD 640gb..

That's a good price on the 640GB Black...
I have one in my current rig and have no issues with it.
$65 is a little out of my budget for this build, but I may try to squeeze it in.

I wouln't mind going with the Seagate 500GB if it weren't for the mixed performance I've seen...
