Just a thought, but what about an older one with a lower read/write speed. Or is read/write dictated by other things other than RPM? I have no idea.

The samsung I have is noticeably more quiet than my LG...
From what I know, samsung and pioneer are the quietest brands..

I think any dvd drive at full spin cannot be quiet. Correct me if i'm wrong.

IF you can find the older Plextor branded Plextors (716, 760) you can limit their speed with the supplied plextor software. For modern DVDs burners I prefer Pioneers for my HTPC setups. Then Sammys (if media is mainly going to be +R) as they are slightly louder but not night and day difference. Liteon, LG, etc can be LOUD.

The quietest dvd drive is one that doesn't spin at all :P.

On another note, I loved my Pioneer. You really can't go wrong with Pioneer or Samsung.
