i agree with the school of thought here that believes slower spinning drives are the quietest, regardless of the brand. All it takes is one un-balanced DVD to make a racket of noise from any DVD drive - when spinning at high RPM's)

Some laptops (toshiba i think) have quiet DVD mini-applets that sit in the system tray to do just this (throttle down the RPM so it's quieter).

I think you can similate this with a program like MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool for DVD-Writers [MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool] but i have not tried it personally.

Sammy, Pioneer or LG.....I've got one of each and 2 LG's all have been fine...we're talking about a $25 - $35) Optical Drive ?!
