My System Specs

Default I'm PISSED With Western Digital.

About a month ago I bought a WD My Passport Essential 250gb portable hdd, It worked fine until last night. Now when I plug it into the front usb ports on my pc it just clicks and tells me that it must be formatted before I can use it. The hdd was about half full of pictures. I got intouch with a WD technical support guy who told me that I should RMA it and that to recover the data on it I have to first send it to a third party data recovery company chosen by WD to get my pictures off of it. This will cost me about 70 dollard canadian. This is Bullshit, I should not have to pay for the data recovery when the problem is with the WD hdd. This will be the last product I buy from WD and the 1 TB Cavair Black in my computer might also be comming out. I might as well go SSD. Tell me what you think of my problem.

The problem might be in the enclosure/USB adaptor, not the HDD itself. Open the thing up, pull out the HDD and see if you can't hook it up directly to your motherboard. This might make RMA-ing a problem, though.

Same happened to my friend, turns out to be the enclosure. So ya, take MpG's advice.

do this as well. A lot of usb ports out there don't supply enough amperage to drive some 2.5" drives. If it sits and clicks it likely isn't getting enough power. Same thing happens to my passport.

Also never ever rely on one HDD for your data. Backups are your best friend.
