Default external case powered by firewire?

I need a new external IDE HDD case as my nGear one just died. And i was really hoping to find one that could be used without a external power adapter. I know that Firewire can provide 12V unlike USB, but are they actually enclosures that can run ONLY off firewire?

With the size of larger hard drives they need more power than a usb/firewire port can give.

With that said Vantec makes some really good enclosures and have made a change for the power brick to be MUCH smaller than before.

I will be using a 3.5" drive. I have done some reading and the only ones I have found were for a 2.5" drive so i think I will be out of luck.

I was looking at the Vantec Nexstar 3 for a replacement.

The only ones I've seen that don't require external power are the ones which use 2.5 drives.

What do you use your external drive for?

You could always cheap out and use a bare sata drive with the headers / PCI slot covers from the P35-DQ6.... :)

The drive I want to use is an IDE drive, and I just find it a hassle to always carry the power cable aroudn with me, it would of just been nice just to use one cable.

RGR

I saw you mention the NEXSTAR3 and didn't realise that they had both SATA and IDE models.
