with the drop in price per GB i have been using raid 10 more and more. The controller cards are cheaper and the performance is faster like RyanJ said.

Thanks guys I will definitely look into that. Those PCI-E X4 & X8 cards they should work in a X16 slot right ?

Poster got it reversed.. RAID 1+0 (stripped set of mirrored drives) is preferred over 0+1 for best performance with redundancy. However, 1+0 is usually not on software or cheap cards.

For storage over performance, you want RAID5 (for 1 to 10 drives) and RAID6 (for 10 + drives)

Well I bought a 3WARE 9650SE 4 port, I did some researche on the dell card recommended above but it would not support the board on the PC its going in so I went with the 3WARE

Just an FYI the Dell card works on anyboard with a bit of electrical tape.

@Lowfat: On the performance side, what will be faster in the same price range, 4x wd black 640 in raid with the dell card in the post or 1x 120gb vertex?(even, 2x 60gb vertec on ud5 onboard raid for 30$ more...)
