My System Specs

Default HDD or SSD OS and application drive

Hey Everyone,

Just started reading about the SSDs on the forum here. I'm wondering if I'll notice a significant boost in performance by using a SSD drive over a HDD for my OS and application/game install. I'd probably put them on a WD Black or Samsung Spinpoint 1TB drives otherwise (thought Velociraptors are an option). It'll being going into an i7 920 system with 12GB OCZ platinum and an ati 4890. Will the SSDs be worth the extra money? I'd probablywant to limit it from 64-80 GB since they're really expensive imo.

Feeback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Knight

Check AkG's latest reviews on this board. The noticeable difference happens at boot, and application/level load times. If you find them dragging, or are a competitive gamer who gains an advantage by loading levels quicker online, it might be worthwhile. Myself, I run everything off a Caviar Black 640gb, which was noticeably snappier than my 500gb. The Velociraptor is now a total waste, in my opinion. If I was going to spend $250 - 300 on storage, it would be on an SSD over the Velociraptor.

Edit: found the comparison chart. OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD Review

+1.

300 bucks gains you 300gigs on the Vrap.

300 bucks gains you 120 gigs on a SSD that is ^magnitudes faster then the rap, for the same price.

Too easy a call imo.

IMO SSD's are the biggest upgrade one can do to a system. I wouldn't be caught dead without them now.

Any recommendations for a specific model? I'm looking at the G Skill Falcon, but the price is a little rough

Right now the Indilinx based SSD are the best bang for your buck. Fast, powerful and have wiper.exe
Your options are G.Skill Falcon 2yr warranty....OCZ Vertex 3yr warranty....or Patriot Torqx TEN FREAKIN' YEAR warranty. All are basically the same drive....Guess which one I recommend....right now ;)

And yes...a review IS in the works of the Torqx.

Patriot Memory - Patriot Memory Product News

relevant part (bold and underline added by me):
"...backed by a new industry leading 10 year warranty for all Torqx SSD products..."

I Can neither confirm nor deny that I will be selling one or two Indi SSDs as soon as my agreement w/ HWC allows me too. BUT you never can tell what will pop up in the B/S/T section ;)

Damn, 10 year! Not as if I plan on using the same SSD for more than a year or two, but still impressive. I do wonder how twice the cache will affect things.
