Every SATA drive is hot-swapable if AHCI is enabled in the bios.

I know this might come a little late, but (quote)Every SATA drive is hot-swapable if AHCI is enabled in the bios.(end:quote) while very true... isnt ALWAYS accurate. I've had a number of SATA drives i could hot swap out of my external usb2.0 drive bay, but would freeze my systemS<--- (meaning more than one system) anytime i tried to attatch or remove the drive from my pc via the internal sata cables. That being said, your milage may vary.

I've got 2 hitatchi 1tb drives, bought at the same time, from the same box, one will hotswap, while the other will freeze any system i've tried to hot swap it out of. I have other drives that freeze the system as well, but the hitatchi's are a good example, because 2 supposidly exact hard drives produce very different results.

We've already established in a previous thread that you also need a compatible OS and motherboard south bridge chipset to have hot-swappable SATA drives: eSata

something is wrong with the drive or the port then. I actually ment to say that all Sata 3Gbps drives are hotswapable.

I just wanted to illustrate the fact that you can expect that the odd time your going to come across one that just wont do it for ya. (for whatever reason)

With the right equipment even PATA HDDs can be "hot-swapped".

I mounted a PATA mobile HDD rack in a 5.25" USB2 drive enclosure.

I can leave it connected to a system, power down the enclosure, swap HDDs, and then power up the enclosure without rebooting.

Voila. Instant "hotswap".

You are talking about USB though. All USB is hot swap capable. We were talking SATA/eSATA.

Yeah, that's why I put "hotswap" in quotes.
