External Hardrive Freezing "My Computer"

My Acomdata 160GB won't load properly anymore when I turn it on. I can't seem to access/view the data when I turn on the hard drive. It ends up freezing "My Computer" when I turn it on. Is there anyway I can recover my data? I've tried some software programs but they also cannot read the external HDD.

I also tried sticking it in my freezer, but still no luck.

Would opening the case do any good?

have you tried removing hdd from enclsure and install in pc..
maybe enclosures pooched

I've had a couple of external enclosures die on me; in all cases, the drives were still working.

Ok I took the drive out, it's an IDE and I have SATA as bootable, and my Bios is trying to boot from the IDE. I changed the BIOS settings. Specifically, I went into advanced changes the "Controller Mode" from IDE to RAID. Was this correct? B/C windows now boots fine.

But when I go to management setting and try to rescan disk, the IDE drive does not appear.

Also I forgot to note, when I first put in the drive and was able to access windows. There was a prompt about updating the drive, but it talked about instability. I tried to get it back but to no avail. The IDE drive doesn't seem to be appearing in the BIOS. Do i have to set it to master for it to appear? I'm new to this.

They are working realy well and disk never get to hot because...he lay on your table:) I like this little shit more than all my external HD, exept my lacie 2Big Tripple Network Raid storage;) that's, what I call a beast.

The BIOS setting should be AUTO and usually you would see it listed in the BIOS. If everything in your PC is SATA then setting that IDE drive to master is fine. It can be a slave too since it's the only IDE device in your system. When your system POST's it should be displaying the IDE drive model but these screens go by really fast. Make sure the red stripe on the IDE cable is facing towards the power connector of the HD. The best thing to try is to download GParted, burn to DVD and boot from it. This will show you all your drives even when connected with USB. If you get it going download Speedfan and do an analysis of your drive to see any problems.
