You can check THIS review out, which has both HDD's included. In a nutshell, it's pretty much splitting hairs between the two in all the benchmarks and tests. Flip a coin, I suppose.

The WD black 640 will have faster OS boot due to its small platter.

NVM i could be wrong

i use a WD cavier SE16 for OS base on this review here

I think a larger plate would have better access times because of the smaller sectors. The difference in density doesn't exactly increase in speed though (remember the area of a circle is the square of radius), and that's why you don't really see a significant improvement over the other.

I would flip a coin too. Both are great drives. I own the 640.

EDIT: Sorry, forget what I said. It's basically an extra platter. Having an extra platter does help in speed a bit by luck and good control systems but it can also increase read times considerably. Write times should be about the same.

I believe the Caviar SE16's are now the "Blue" line of drives, and they're pretty darn close to the Black drives. Although for future reference, you may want to steer clear of TR's storage reviews, until they get themselves a test bench less than three hardware generations old.

I just bought myself a 1TB Black. I then partitioned it so I could install Vista 32 and Windows 7RC. WOW......what a difference from my old HD.

As far as I know the 1tb is louder and runs more platters then the 640, which contributes to the noise. Personally id go with a single or dual 640 with a 1tb green to save on power and noise.

I also have a co worker who has 16 of them in his file server and they work like a charm.
