Default Best External hard drives?

I need a couple of external hard drives, 1 for my own personal mass storage that needs to be safe, I dont want my files getting corupted... and another 2.5" portable version from 160-320gb or so for the girlfriend to take to sweden with her.

I currently have a WD 500gb My book premium or some rot, this drive has continuously corrupted my files and im scared to put my movie collection backups on this drive, I need something that I KNOW wont destroy them.

As for the other drive, this ones not so vital and im just looking for something thats very portable, decently priced, and doesnt require a DC adapter.

Well if you don't want DC power you need a 2.5" drive. Why not buy a 2.5" drive and throw it in a Vantec Nexstar. That way you could use eSATA + usb (usb is used for power only).

The 2.5" isnt for me and its going to be used mainly on a laptop without eSata, it really doesnt need to be anything specialy just cheap. as for the 3.5" thats a good idea, are the nexstars actively cooled?

If you want a 3.5" drive it will need an external DC power supply for sure. USB only provides 5V which can't run them. And no Nexstars are not actively cooled.

That sucks, I may look into a small NAS for this, something with a little active cooling so that I can just run 2 tb drives mirrored. I REALLY dont want to lose stuff ive been working years (litteraly) in collecting to file corruption.
