I've seen some pretty nice figures coming from the Matrix controller.
I'm planning on slicing the black drives to 100gb each to get the most performance out of them. I've seen HD Tune benchmarks with average throughput in the mid 300's and 8ms response time using the same setup.
I just don't know how much the onboard controller can handle. I got plenty of cpu power, so i'm not worried about cpu utilization.
I might get a dedicated controller card sometime in the future. I've looked into the perc 5/i, but i have mixed feelings about that controller.
