finally found which drive had been setting up a harmonic in my case. you should have seen the look on the lady's face in the local fabricland sewing store when i asked for computer parts.

actually i was after some 1/8" bungee cord. i used it in 2 loops , put my hard drive in the loops and lo, no more harmonics!!

just shows ya what the weeb can solve any problem.
