can dropping hdd kill it?
so my 2 HDD cages are about a foot off the ground(carpet) on top of a drawer thing alongside my mobo. 5 drives total between the 2 cages, they're from my TJ07.
My ignorant mom walked by and knocked them down and didn't think of picking them up...-_-" can this kill my hdds? cause i tried to boot, and it gave me some weird characters instead of booting...

They are fooked!

It's dead Jim!
Some 2.5" laptop drives have "drop sensors" that will park the heads while on if it detects a fall. Those are the only drives I can think of that are "insured" against falls, and even then they arn't failproof.

Chances are that most of your drives, if not all, are gone, or to quote enaberif...

If they were powered when dropped. There's a very high chance that they're borked.

Sounds like your mom owes you 5 HDDs

And don't call your mom ignorant.

That too, they shouldn't of been in an area where they could be easily knocked down. Either way looks like you've got some RMA'ing to do, and possibly new drives owed to you by your mother.

Your Mom had an accident, you were ignorant.

nvm..working again.......what a freak out @_@ ...my 30-someodd gigs of music were on those drives..reason im was so mad was cause my mom didnt do anything about it..and they werent even in a place easily knocked down, my dad lifts the laundry through the same passage way and he never touches anything.....my mom didnt pick anything up-_-"

That sounds like an awful place to put your running hard drives.

gingerbee March 23, 2009 10:15 PM

ya i don't think the value of the hard drives are going to replace data lost do your backupppss

Yeah.... I'm thinking a 250G drive in an external enclosure might come in handy for backing up your media files. :)
