My System Specs

Default

Alright, interesting to hear another viewpoint on this. To be honest I've only done 2 installs of Vista and hadn't noticed anything (or never thought about it) regarding short stroking. I just decided to RAID 5 instead.

One thing I noticed is that on the Seagate Barracuda SATA drives it comes stock with a jumper on it that limits it to a compatibility mode. According to HD Tach my thruput almost doubled on my RAID after removing these jumpers from all my drives.

Results from "Long Bench" on my system after pulling the jumpers...

You can short stroke a raid 5 to gain more performance...

Like it was already pointed out, your windows install and vital programs would be running on the first 100gb portion of your benchmark. Performance is dependant on how organized you keep your hard drives, if you have stuff all over the place and some of your important software gets put to the inner edge of the platters your going to see horible performance vs the outer edge. as for installing vista, its in the tools section when your formating your drive, theres a few usefull tools in there.

Thanks for the info. I'm seeing what you mean now with the HD Tach data sitting in front of me. Looks like I'd get decent thruput even up to 300GB before it starts bombing out....

Edit: When do I get my Folding tag? Anyone? I'm #60 now

Did you post in the thread tittled Tag requests here? thats more of a question to be aimed at that thread.

The main reason I partition and short stroke is to make my hard drive more "modular" I can format data A without effecting data B. Or defrag Data A without having to do Data B. There are many benefits to having a partitioned hard drive besides any performance gains. But it is nice to know that my crucial programs have the fastest 10% of the hard drive while my stored files that arent used often occupy the last 40%.
