Default WD Caviar Black 640gb

NCIX.com - Buy Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 7200RPM 32MB Dual Proc 3.5IN SATA Hard Drive OEM 5YR Mfg Warranty - WD6401AALS In Canada.

Just ordered this drive off of ncix, supposedly its faster than the 500gb version by a noticeable amount. Think it was worth the extra money over a $75 500gb drive? Judging by the few hdtach scores i could find itll be around twice as fast or better in everything than my current aging 200gb ide drive.

I don't think you'll be disapointed! I have one myself, and I really like it so far

THat Drive can give the Older Raptors a run for their money.
The platter setup and density is what makes that type of Drive Shine.
No complaints from any owner I know with one of those drives.
It really is a smart solid buy, and worth the premium over a standard 500GB one.

Regards,
ST

I just went from a WD 500 to a WD 640 Black last weekend. The difference is definately noticeable. And I'm now all 5.9's on my Vista performance index, the 500 was at 5.7.

I noticed a fairly significant improvement, even in day to day tasks (though that's awfully subjective, of course. Here are my HDTach runs, comparing to my older WD 250GB and my WD 500GB Caviar.

Only real complaint I have is that my WD 640GB Black gets rather noisy when installing/running a virtual machine in VMware from it. Though it was like that with my WD 500GB as well so I guess VM's are just a bit harsh on hard drives.

Also the Seagate 7200.12 500GB is pretty much on-par with the 640GB drives for performance as it has a single 500GB platter (640GB drives have dual 320GB platters). I'm thinking about grabbing one to replace my 500GB RAID0 array (dual 250GB drives) since my RAID performs pretty much identical to it.

I upgraded my main PC's 2 x 500 GB Seagate 7200.10 to 2 x 640 GB WD Blacks and I have noticed real improvements. The 640 GB Blacks are faster, quieter (I can barely hear them even during heavy seek activity and even when running Virtual Machines off the second drive), and run cooler than the drives they replaced.

I got them from Infonec where they are still currently selling for 90 bucks:

This is what I used for my new rig and plan to get another one soon! Got mine for $88. Use shopbot.ca to find the lowest price. Then head over to NCIX and use there price match feature ;)
