How do the 640 GB blacks compare to the 1 TB blacks? Any reason why the 1 TB might not perform as well?

I once compared the 640GB and 1TB Caviar Blacks using HD Tach. Unfortunately I don't still have both of them to do it again and post the graph, but I recall that the 640GB average read speed was slightly higher than the 1TB. As for why it turns out that way, I'm not sure.

The 640GB has less platters. To a hard drive...less platter means less work to find the data that you requested. So the less platters the faster a HDD is....and cooler running and less noisy as well.

So I got my 640GB Black!

QUESTION: What should my allocation unit size be? Should I leave it at default?

Got mine as well today. 222mb/s burst speeds, 98mb/s avg read speeds. cant even hear the thing. Its ALOT better than my old 200gb ide drive that was 100mb/s burst and 46mb/s avg read, that thing also makes ALOT of noise with activity. Now im just waiting to get my 750gb storage drive and im all set :D

Here you go guys. Here is an HD Tach test LONG run. It'sa comparison between two of my other drives. I'll do more tests soon. I can't wait for this to be an OS drive!

First off: WD Caviar Black 6401 vs. WD Raptor 150 GB

Next up: WD Caviar Black 6401 vs. WD Caviar 500 GB AAKS

You can see that there has been a very large improvement over the last generation! I'm definitely glad I bought this. I highly recommend it to everyone else.

EDIT #4+ (because I keep forgetting things): Here's an HD Tune read speed.

I can probably get a little more performance out of an Intel chip. Shouldn't really affect the overall feeling of the computer though. I'll be getting a new setup in the Summer.
