My System Specs

Default External HDD

Hello,

My gf will need an external HDD, and I don't really know what to get?

Requirement : 250 GB + / no power adapter (USB only)

Do you have any suggestion for a sub 100$ one?

Will it be cheaper to buy a drive enclosure + separate HDD

Thanks!

If you want one with no power adapter you're going to have to get one with a 2.5" HDD so that will limit your options for drive enclosures, and probably put a drive enclosure + HDD outside of your price range.

Well, Western Digital have their My Passport Essential series which I would personally trust (2.5' form factor, no power adapter) even if I don't own one. You can find the 250 GB model for around 100$ and the 320 GB for a tad more.

I guess you could also look at Seagate, they have the FreeAgent Go series, didn't heard much about it, but since it come from Seagate, if you aren't afraid of faulty firmware, I would trust it. It's around the same price.
