I find that Raid 0 gives me a decent boost to things like OS bootup and game level loading, with no loss of capacity. Mind, I also do regular external backups for my data. Quite frankly, anyone who's seriously worried about a component failure taking out their data, they should be doing something that involves storage outside of the computer entirely. There are far more components that can go wrong than just a couple of HDD's.

Hmm. I don' see a boost in OS loadup time... but when I open different programs and windows, it appears to be alot more snappy and responsive.

Same, OS loadtime never changed for me, maybe like a second or two but nothing i noticed. Raid0 just makes everything seem more responsive. Installs take less time, unraring files. etc etc.
Overall its way better imo. Installing cod4 takes 5 min instead of 20 :/ lol (even though i dont game anymore id still raid0 if i felt like dropping the cash, but atm id rather get a raven, but i probably never will :()

just thought i would add my 2 cents.

raid is awesome. But i can say you defintiely get what you pay for. the longest time i was using onboard raid since it was usually only either raid 0 or 1. But spending the cash on a dedicated raid card is worth every penny. You get much better performance, lower overhead and if the card dies you pop a new card in and your done. Also by getting a raid card you could get a SAS card which you can use with either a breakout cable or a SAS expander. But depending on what i was using it would depend on the brand. If i was setting up a computer that would have high random IO and i was on a budget i would get the 3ware 9690SA-4i (i did, and it's awesome) but if i was using it for alot of linear stuff (ie: movie edting workstation) and i was on a budget i would have gone for the areca ml-1210 both are in the sub $500 price range.

As an example i use the 3ware in my movie NAS for my home theatre. If i take 2 dvd's (which i own) and rip them on the computer using the same HDD and same DVD drive. The Raid card is 2x faster off the line than the non raid setup. (and that's in raid 5). On the normal PC i average off the line around 4-5MB/s on the raid NAS i average 10-12MB/s

Abd finally the niec thing about using a SAS expander is (128 Drives max :))
