Considering I bought my Areca at $1600.... I think Areca is a SOLID name.
Hell, I'd take it over a 3ware if I didn't have a budget....

I've just never seen them new (and not EOLed, although I'm not sure if the 1220 is EOL) at under $400.

EDIT: For anyone who cares, my Areca is the 1280-ML. 24 sexy ports of SATA goodness.

Now... all I need to put it to potential is a SC846TQ. But that's in Phase 2.

Areca is a good name. The 1220 is PCIe-8 so be sure you have an 8 or 16 slot available. Fakeraid (found on consumer level motherboards and some low end add on cards) is not the greatest in the world. Software RAID under Linux or BSD is quite reliable but can't match the speed of a hardware controller. Another good quality brand is LSI (MegaRaid).

on the ibm servers. make sure they are not the kind that need that special dongle cable otherwise it could become expensive fast. Also SCSI drives are loud and run very hot.
