different drives in RAID 5 configuration
ok so I have 2 250gb hitachi drives with an 8mb cache. I want to purchase another 250 so I can RAID 5 them together.
I was considering the Seagate Barracuda 250gb with 16mb cache.
My question is, can you mix different (brand, rotation speeds, cache sizes etc.) hard drives in a RAID 5 config.?
I know it's not always recommended, but is it possible?
I'm using an on-board controller BTW...
Yes you can mix and match. They'll perform at the speed of the slowest drive. I currently have 1 seagate 7200.11, 3 WD Blacks, and 3 WD Blues all in the same array.
BTW RAID5 on onboard, you are going to get some very poor write speeds FYI. So hopefully this isn't your boot drive.
My system drive is RAID 0. I don't save any important files on it...
Thanks for the clarification! Wasn't too sure... :thumb:
