here is a clip of me talking, with my headset on and my head positioned directly infront of the computer. My head is about 7 or 8 inches away from the computer

just hoping I can resolve this quickly, before my express RMA runs out
Holy crap, that is louder than I thought initially... there has to be something up with it?

Holy.... That is WAY to loud, heavy load or not. RMA it. As for why Seagate's support lines are so busy, well, Seagate's recent drives have been having some issues, I wouldn't be surprised if theres a lot of panicking people tieing up Seagate's support lines.

Seagate 1 TB drives comitting suicide? (this does not seem related to your problem)

Yeah dude. I have a Seagate Barracuda that I just bought a couple of weeks ago, and it make the exact same sound that im picturing your text making. Im pretty sure it should be normal for it only really happens when im doing something like loading stuff onto it or installing something on to it, but otherwise its alright. It passed the test.

One of my old Maxtors was louder than that and made other weird noises and lasted over 5 years and still working ! :D

I honestly doubt you will get an RMA from Seagate about this - unless you bark like a dog ;) maybe then ! :D

thx for the advice everyone, I don't think I'll return it, seems like it'll be too much trouble. I guess my next upgrade will be an SSD hehehe

The reason they cannot RMA your drive is because it passed all tests including the long DST which scans the entire surface of your drive and runs smart threshold testing and read / seeking tests. That noise is louder than normal but it's seeking noise and therefore your drive can last a long time, nobody can know. If there was large clicking, klonk, buzzing or other abnormal noises maybe. I've tried recording my drives by having the mics near it and I hear the same noise during heavy access - the mic picks up a lot of and for some reason some batches of drives are noisier than others - I've had this with Maxtor and they lasted me ever since and still going. Don't assume anything - be safe and have backups in case of sudden failure, you can never be too careful with ANY hard drive now.......it's not a question of if they will fail but when - they WILL fail eventually but only the Gods know the secret :D

not quite true, i've got a few seagate drives that have been going for 4+ years! Although, i just bought a 500gb drive, and its sata power connector is broken. The end prong and cover are just barely hanging on... i've got to go to ncix tomorrow and exchange that.
