Best way of installing raid 1

Im getting 2 500gb drives as storage, and with all of the recent failures, i've decided to put them in raid 1, just in case. Now, they will not be my primary drives, so i will not be installing windows on them. What is my best way of installing raid on them? I've only ever done it through windows setup.

edit: If i buy 1 640 or 750 gb drive now, and put files on it, could i put another one onto it to make raid 1 in a few weeks or a month? or would i have to reformat the drive, and start from scratch to make raid 1?

Yes, you can build or rebuild a mirror from a drive with data on it already.

That said, Raid10 on a non os drive is pretty much the domain of enterprise critical data. What are you storing on there that you need back instantly?
