My 36GB is not too loud, only when seeking. I use it as the OS drive on my home server, and it doesnt keep me up at night or anything.

Maybe the older Raptors were louder but the new VelociRaptor is dead quiet.

I have the 300GB one and it produces less noise than both a WD5000AAKS and WD6401AALS both at idle and during seeking.

Were all aware of the improvement in noise levels with the VRaptor (and the increased $$$), the OP was referencing the Raptors.

My Raptor is pretty quiet. It really depends what you have in your case. Fans could drown out the sound easily, and if you have some anti-vibration rubber washers or something, it could help out the sound a lot. I can barely hear mine over my 120s (Noctua P12's) in a P182 case.

The TJ09 Cases have the dedicated HD Bays up front in removeable cages, although they are "rubber insulated" they are completely "open" on both sides of the case via large screened vents (you can look right in either side and see the Drives), with the Tower sitting beside and very quiet 120mm Fans...the old Raptor "chugs' pretty good..hahahaha....no biggie really, but as said, would rather have invested that coin into a Barracuda...but oh well!
Actually I was looking at a 750GB Barracuda on NCIX yesterday for about $85 and a 1TB for $110....man are they getting cheap!! Pretty hard to justify a VRaptor..

Yeah, my raptors 36GBs used to make some crazy high pitch noise as well. When defragmenting they would be just plain noisy... I say, when you buy raptors... Get ready for some noise for the speed.

iPod posted!

Well I've owned the 74GB Raptor (16MB cache version) and also the 150GB Raptor. Neither of those made a whining noise at idle but the 150GB was loud at seek. The 74GB was roughly normal at seek.

Honestly though...if you're in the market for an old generation Raptor, you're better of buying a WD6401AALS drive instead. It's more quiet and beats the Raptors in performance.
