I have a 750gb seagate 7200.11 and it shakes like a vibrator and hums quite annoyingly, even when idle. Interestingly, it doesn't run as hot as my samsung 320gb which is still and silent when idle. No experiences with WD in the last 5 years or so.

The black line-up is amazingly quiet. The raptors however, during seek, is ridicolously loud, never had a v-raptor, so I can't speak on their behalf. Other than their enterprise drives (Raptors and RE3), their desktop/laptop drives are quiet.
