Default Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 160GB SATAII

This is the hard drive i used to install Vista on for my new machine. Up until now i've been solely using Western Digital drives, and they've all been dead silent for me.

But since booting up my machine for the first time, the hard drive has been plaguing me with it's unnecessary noise. I mean, if I can hear it over my Antec 900 case (lowest fan settings), and some music playing in the background, then it's way too loud. My 500GB WD isn't even audible unless i put my ear to the front grille, whereas the Seagate sounds like a frickin geiger counter during heavy access times.

Just wondering, have Seagates always been loud, or did i just seem to get the runt of the litter?

(BTW, S.M.A.R.T. data reads as my HDD being perfectly healthy)

My System Specs

Default

I don't know about 7200.11 drives but my 120GB 7200.7 drives are extremely noisy too but they are pretty damn old as well so I can't really say if its just age or it's how the drives are. However I have WD 160GB drives from about the same time and they are basically silent still...

That's not to say WD is perfect, the 250GB drives (fairly old) and the 500GB drive (about a year old) in my PC are all pretty noisy too on heavy seek (loading Windows etc).

the last time i had a loud hard drive was my old 300Mhz AMD machine running a 12.5GB HDD. (not as long ago as you think, about 5 years ago)
