This sounds like a bit much, but it's going to be interesting to see.

You know I can't say......but from what I have seen it seems pretty close to the mark even though 50-80% is a huge margin.

What I can say is that the R700 will be very, very fast.

But you're right, that's a huge margin.

But "pretty close to the mark" would be phenomenal performance.

I costed out the cards (well, the 4870 X2 at a theoretical $600ish) along with waterblocks to the following:

4870 X2 + EK Full coverage = $800 (all in, tax + shipping)
BFG GTX 280 H2OC (pretty good clocks here too) - $600 (all in, tax + shipping)

So for me, the question would be: is the performance difference to max out my gaming (1920 x 1200 at full settings in my games) worth that extra $200?

I guess I'll wait and see.

Given what you've just found I would sit and wait just to be safe. Saying that Im sure that BFG GTXWC has some headroom to get 30% more performance than the stock 280-all that without the worries of cf driver issues. Personally Ive invested in a crossfire capable rig so I would love to see some better driver support and scaling for upcoming games.

Wow, all I can say is that I'm glad I evaded the upgrade big and didn't jump for a 4870 right away. 80% is a HUGE margin, even if it comes to half of that, I will still be pretty darn impressed. Gotta love competition!

Well if your gaming at high resolutions its worth considering but a 4870 at 1650*1080 is a monster even with poor driver support. Cant wait to see what it does with tailored drivers and a waterblock.
