AMD upcoming cards.. Volcanic Island

I just stumbled up this piece of news and it is very interesting. It looks as if AMD will be releasing a card at the end of the year basedn on 20nm process. Here's link

The question for this line of cards would be: Are they going to address the coil whine issue that is due to overheating of the parts in their GPUs? And are they going to improve the stuttering and frame latency experienced by owners of their current cards?

Coil whine in GPUs has been around FOREVER!!!!!!! And most likely will never go away.

I owned the titan and DC2T along with 7970GHz and vapor X and I can tell you that AMD cards are the worst when it comes to this. The XFX GHz ED would start making noises @50% load and if I cranked it up to 100% it was like hell. The Sapphires didn't have it as bad as the XFX and I didn't encounter any whine with Nvidia cards, not even the 670.

I run 4x6950 cranked at 100% (mining bitcoins) I hear no coil whine. I have never heard coil whine.

My understanding is dirty power exacerbates coil whine, and my power is pretty damn clean.

Or maybe my tinnitus is so bad I can't hear it :haha:

What i'm more worried about it putting a volcano in my chassis. The heat output on a 6950 vs a 7970 is a huge jump, so i'm guessing volcanos are hot hot hot.

like man. My CPU is new, bought it in January. It's just that I have not encountered the same issue with Nvidia cards. Might want to check your tinnitus, good one there. I am waiting to hear more about the Volcanic Islands, wouldn't it be something if they turn out to be hotter chips?

Is it the card whining or is it the PSU? Either way it's the card's fault, but I always though most coil whining was the PSU dealing with voltage feedback from the card.

It was the card. Not the PSU. I never heard it when I have Nvidia GPU in there. The latest review with 7990 AMD said it was due to the parts overheating when the card is being utilised. I hope they get better parts for the next series.

I'm more concerned about the latter, stuttering/frame latency.
More importantly, the whole motion blur / lightboost with Nvidia cards. There's only a few samsung models that work with Radeon cards, even less now since I can only find a single 23" one that's available.

They have the whole bit/litecoin mining thing going for them though.

Just some pics I found on another forum...

I'm not knowledgeable enough on the AMD side of things to make something out of the pics myself, they might be fake, as always in these "leaks"....
