More than likely because the 8XXX will be revamps of the original 7XXX series just refined.

That means they know the 8xxx will use the same base core and PCB, just slightly tweaked. And from a customers POV it's nice to know that you van buy the cooler for your current card and possibly re-use it when he decides to upgrade.

I bet the naming of AMD's next gen cards will change because of this in an attempt to avoid confusion.

I was hoping that they would at least make some sort of improvement like more efficiently running cores, higher clock, etc etc.

Even GTX Titan rumour-ish news sounds better than this.
