You say that, but remember the last generation? THEY had a dual GPU card, called the 6990, or Antilles, comprised of two Cayman chips. And Cayman needed more power to run and generated more heat than the current Tahiti chips (see attached graph from HWC review). If they could put two cayman chips on one card, they can put two Tahiti chips on one card.

Abyss has a point there but regardless AMD has a pretty big mountain to climb to make the single card solution appealing over two 7950's let alone nvidia solutions

True, but it could be other things as well. I wasn't saying my thoughts on the matter were the sole reason just what the possibilities could be. Could be many other reasons or technical issues that we aren't made privy to.
The fact that there Tahiti chips came first, and have been out longer and we haven't seen it means one of two things. Either they don't want to, or can't.

Call me an AMD Fanboi if you wish, but I resent it when people say that AMD 'can't' produce a dual GPU card.

I am neither because we need both to be competitive so we the end user don't get screwed.
But there is obviously some reasoning that we do not see. Be it finanical , technical, or beaurocratic.

well, best thing for them IMO would be to release a dual GPU 7970 for $800.

5970 was $600, 6990 was $700, new 7990 can be $800

Well, I have seen talk of many things (Including the phantom 660TI from nvidia) and I would rather see it and believe it more than anything.

Too true... they tend to have a bit of a gap between it and the x80 and x70 but it's starting to get a bit too long now... Can't wait to see what the 660 will do.


back to OT... there should be nothing stopping them from releasing a 7990 apart from cost-benefit.. ie it's probably not worth it..

Though if they go more budget than nvidia has (without cutting it's B**** off) then they could get a really decent chunk of sales.
