Default Eeek! Several GeForce 7s to hit end of life in April

This is a surprising rumor from VR-Zone :

It would appear that the majority of NVidia's 100 to 300 dollar 7-series cards are going by the wayside by April 28-- seems a little extreme although I guess there's no way they can compete with their upcoming lineup. You'd think they'd keep them around for a while though.

Personally, I would think that they would move the 7900GTX, 7900GT and 7950GX2 into EOL. They are not going to discontinue their bread-and-butter mainstream cards until at least two months after the release of the 8600-series.

Basically, even if they cancel production of the mainstream chips there are still more than enough chips in the AIB channel to last the next 4 months at least. That is exactly what happened with the 6600-series; even a few months after the 7600-series were released, 6600 cards were still in production because of the glut of chips in the channel.

There really isn't anything to worry about.....

Yeah, you're right- I wouldn't worry since these cards really don't compete with the upcoming lineup, and one would be foolish to buy one after April unless they are on really low clearance prices. So yeah, to avoid having a glut of them in the system that will eventually have to be sold at a loss- better to stop production now.

Why are people so surprised when they buy something thats been out for a few years and then hear its either EOL or discont? Do some reasearch :)

With the drop in Intel and AMD cpus things like AGP will be dead which is a lot of the 6 and 7 series cards for nvidia so it does make sense.

Cheaper faster cpus and wicked video cards... wooyah.

EOL doesn't really mean much to anybody unless they were hoping to pick up a second one for SLI sometime in the future, and even then, for the same price they can probably pick up a next gen card that performs better as a single than the older gen cards would in SLI.

EOL only matters for CPU or mem platforms where the user will not be able to upgrade their current gear and are forced to upgrade everything.

The 8600's are basically 7900 series cards with DX-10 capabilities anyways. They are not gonna outperform them by much if any. I personally have no DX-10 plans for years and will ride it out with my 7900 GTO's. I also agree that it cannot be a surprise that they are EOL since they are getting "old".
