Capacitors, MOSFETs, ICs - they all can use rare earth elements.

You'd need quite a bit of material , and know-how, and insturmentation to return a lot of these rare earth metals back into something usable. Not to mention the materials needed to seperate them, and enough volume to make good yields.

Its just not as easy with them as it is with the simpler metals out there.

Gold prices are high right now due to the lack of faith in the US currency, and not due to any supply issues. Gold prices are due to fall this year a bit, or at the very least, stay at current levels.

Arinoth you might wait a few months perhaps that engagement ring will be cheaper by the summer :p

Most rare earth elements are plentiful, but environmentally arduous to obtain. China cornered the market by lowering prices and putting competing mines out of business, resulting in a temporary monopoly. They are now using this for political and economic leverage.

So while there may be supply constraints, there's no lack of these resources in the ground. As artificially low prices rise and the value of currencies change, other mines will again become viable. An older mine is currently being upgraded in California.
