More info on 6990!

The pics are the same as last week, but the text is interesting...

This time, AMD is toying with a revolutionary new cooler design that makes use of a cylindrical blower (like ones used in air-curtains, on a much smaller scale) to draw air from the rear portion of the cooler, and circulate through the complex vapor-chamber enhanced heatsink inside. In other words, the card lacks a fan intake hole where it's typically located, but the rear portion serves that purpose. Power is drawn in from two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors.

Personally, I think the days of dual GPU cards are long over. Back when P35 was around, it made sense but these days every worthwhile mobo has at least dual PCI-E x8 slots and CF / SLI features very good scaling. At this point, a dual GPU card is nothing more than a marketing gimmick IMO.

Note: this is my PERSONAL opinion. My professional opinion is quite different...

one central fan....hmm...not sure its gonna cut it noise wise, at least.

sure you got two massive heatsinks on either side, but you need some force to push air thru.

and one gpu is gonna be fed hot air from the other?

hmmmmmmm..they havent improved there

I don't get why they don't just use 3 fans like the Accelero Xtreme and make sure the VRM's are cooled. One fan isn't enough for dual gpus.

Here are some more pics that were on fudzilla.com of the rumored 6990. It looks like a pretty hefty card to say the least. Maybe not too easy to crossfire LOL
