The problem I see though is that power consumption is rising, not lowering. I'd love to see better performance per watt. We've never needed such large PSUs before until now.

imagine 5870x2 in crossfire on 16x lanes........
If a single 5870 will be bottlenecked by 8x, then why would 5870x2 be any better on 16x?

The power consumption figure I've seen given for 5870 is ~190W, which isn't really all that bad if those performance numbers are true.

I think it's early to tell the performance of these cards without drivers that take advantage of them. When I researched g200 cards, first benchmarks weren't far off 8800, but when I installed GTX 275 year later it kicked ass.
