Default Major AMD price cuts on July 9th?

I haven't seen anything around to back this story up, but here it is anyway- take it as you choose.....

AMD Monday will slash prices by as much as 30 percent on its Athlon 64 X2 dual-core microprocessor series, according to a system builder with a long-standing business relationship with the chip giant.

The system builder, who preferred to remain anonymous, said manufacturer prices for the top-of-the-line Athlon 64 X2 6000+ would drop from $241-per-unit to about $170. The price of an Athlon 64 X2 4000+ would be cut from about $90 to $69, he said.
AMD would not comment on price cuts for its Athlon line.
"AMD does not comment on rumors or speculation," the company said in a statement.
Fry's Electronics July 2 listed the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ at $169.99 on its Web site. That listing represented an at-cost offering of the chip ahead of the scheduled July 9 price cut, according to the system builder. Fry's had removed the $169.99 listing as of July 5, when the retailer listed the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ at $229.99. That particular chip was tagged by Fry's as "Sold Out."

Sub $200 CDN for a 6000+ would be a pretty decent price point that would probably move a fair amount of chips.

What is their current FX chip?

If they started offering that at a decent price with the multis left unlocked they'd probably have a chance at grabbing some market share back.

not for us folders tho ... c2d/c2q still slaughter the amd's at folding.

since cpu will be ~ 40-50% of the cost of an oc'ed quad folding rig after intel price cut july 22, and prolly produces 50% more output on smp, amd still isn't in my plans.

The lower price point will help in the non-folding market, but not sure if it will get any share back with intel's cuts looming.

$195 for a 6000+ is pretty decent.

Any ideas on how well these OC?

I played with a 6000+ sometime back and I only managed to get to 3.2-3.3 ish. Somewhere in there. Not that impressive. And that was under water.

6000+ is pretty much already at the max that architecture is capable of, so you're not going to see too big of an OC out of it. However, considering it's nearly equal in performance to the E6600 and it's a good $60 cheaper, it makes it one hell of a bargain for those who don't overclock (at least until Intel drops their prices in a couple of weeks).

That's what I was thinking.

I wonder what the sweet spot for AM2s is for a person who's planning on OCing. The other prices are similarly interesting.
