Instead, for those not wanting to spend so much, we have i5. This limited line-up limits upgrades as well, with only three real cpu options.

I'd like to take a $500 EVGA Classified, and clock a celeron chip into the stratosphere...ain't gonna happen though.

i7 is in servers, so it's not going anywhere as a socket. the issue is that the things that go into that socket will dissappear.

Cost isn't the issue either...More expensive than AMD, but faster too...so the cost is justified, IMHO, at the entry-level. But go with anything other than an i920, and those costs do become questionable.
That's the thing though, the things that bothers me the most is the new Socket. I mean Gulftown has been annouced as a 6 cores, 12 threads CPU which would be release on the Core i7 platform.

But then you look at the other CPU that would be release for the mainstream and they are all Core i5 2 cores, 4 threads, which would suck.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nehalem_(CPU_architecture)

Just read the section 45nm. Also, I notice that Lynnfield doesn't seem to use PQI, what would it use?

Arg, such a mess that intel started...

QPI is basically an interconnect to PCI-E and SB controllers. PCI-E is intergrated into i5 already, so QPI isn't needed. This also means that latency to the pci-e bus will be less...potentially making i5 the better gaming plaform for multiple vgas.

It's very confusing to me for them to take this direction. And becasue of less pins in teh oscket, clocking may be hampers by less current available too.

Direct Media Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is suppose to replace the QPI. Mhh, interresing, so you are telling me the PQI didn't have the PCI-E controller integrated? I would like to see some benchmarks for that Core i5. It will be very interesting. But what about the other LGA socket that suppose to come out, LGA-1567 with the Beckton processor. 8 Cores, 16 threads...

God, I think Intel just created a mess.

Yes, DMI will be used for HDD/disc/USB communication. The media in "DMI" is discs, of course.

And yes, this mess is what the outcry is about...which plaform do you choose? When alot of users have pcs for 5 years....will i5 be sufficient for a user in the future, or does AMD make a better proposition, knowing that next-gen chips are back-wards compatible?

I chose AMD...when the board I will use drops NDA and is on shelves, you'll see alot more AMD action from me..becuase when I get bored, and have a bit extra cash, I'll go buy a cheap AM3 chip and have some clocking fun...

3 Sockets announced.

Still we don't know what will happen to the Core i7. Will they be put to a server market with CPU tagged a 1000$ each or keep in the mainstream market. The thing is... they should have waited to release the Core i7 in only servers, and really TAG it as a SERVER CPU. At least, they should do it now if they phase out entry level Core i7. Like before you had the Xeon and something else (P4, Core2Duo...etc).

Looks like we were Guinea Pigs for Intel to test their "Server" processors...

Hey.. collectively we all have a say.. if we all jumped on Skulltrails.. we might be stuck with FB-DIMMS now lol

I'm suspecting X58 has outsold the 54xx chipset range by now.

I'm gonna stick with whatever platform will get me 6 / 8 cores first.. and a side of AMD Ontario's CPU just because

I was going to buy i7 920 for $330

So, my question is, should I rma my Gigabyte mobo and ocz ram ( pay for 15% re-sroking fee - about $45). Go for AMD P2 x3 720, wait for i5, or go ahead and build this i7?
Computers are usually purchased for specific tasks and hae a finite life. If you believe your I7 will serve the task for the expected time frame.. then no point in returning.

Long live i7s!

See my point is that if you already spent money on i7 you are probably one of those people that upgrades every day :p. So It isn't that big of a deal. Also i7 920 rocks NOW. It would be suicide for Intel to drop the i7 CPU's and only have server CPU's. Suicide. You guys are worrying about nothing and only rumors. The fact is. Intel has staited many times that it will support i7 for at least 2 years. They put too much money into this platform to just drop it. Personally I don't see a need for i5 right now. They could just make cheaper i7s on the x58.

Don't worry. Be happy.
