Really at the end of the day it's all about what each individual can "afford" and the need to have the "new" "better" hardware. For me I could afford to go to I7 but 775 is doing me fine at the moment. Maybe in a few months.....
i7 920 330$
Gigabyte x58-UD3R 230$
OCZ gold 3x2GB DDR3-1600 100$

660$ for mobo/Ram/CPU.

I don't know about you guys but i remember paying about double that amount for my P4...even my P3 back in the days.

So i7 is definetly not expensive.

Did ANYONE found another link stating that they will phase out Core i7... so far I didn't find anything.

So really, nothing is set in stone... and if you go read about their Gulftown CPU. They say it will released on the LGA 1366 socket.

I don't think they will remove this series for now.

OK. I have not read all the post here, and I have to go out. Here my $1000 question. I ordered

Gigabyte x58 UD3
OCZ gold 3 channel, 6 GB
TX 650W
HD 4850

I was going to buy i7 920 for $330
and a cm690 case.

So, my question is, should I rma my Gigabyte mobo and ocz ram ( pay for 15% re-sroking fee - about $45). Go for AMD P2 x3 720, wait for i5, or go ahead and build this i7?

Considering all the trouble, I wouldn't also the fact you will LOSE 50$ for the whole thing. I don't see why people are so stressed out with this. When the Core i5 will be release, the prices would be around the same as the i7 920... but you will have other version SLOWER but CHEAPER.

Never in my post did I say it was expensive today. Those prices you quoted are as of today. But when I7 came out I think you couldn't get a mobo/ram/cpu for $660. Just for 6GB of ram it might have been $300+ and that much too for a I7 board. And the 920 was around $450 I think.

Yes today it's a good buy price wise over 775 but early on it was easily way more "expensive".

I'll give you my take on that.

When it came out, I ordered it on release. It cost about $800ish for board and CPU but I was looking at the prospect of a Q9650 and Rampage Extreme, so in reality, the only extra cost I had was the RAM, which was about $289 or something (can't remember)

All that said, I've thoroughly enjoyed my i7 920. Good performance, folds like a monster and it's fun to tweak.

I'm on my third X58 board and I can say for sure this one is the one I will stick with for the long haul (at least a year )

The issue is not that they will drop the socket, but more that the options for the end consumer, whne it comes to cpus, is very limited. Many people, myself included, are dissappointed to hear that the 920 will be phased out, rather than having a lower price, making entry into i7 more affordable.

Instead, for those not wanting to spend so much, we have i5. This limited line-up limits upgrades as well, with only three real cpu options.

I'd like to take a $500 EVGA Classified, and clock a celeron chip into the stratosphere...ain't gonna happen though.

i7 is in servers, so it's not going anywhere as a socket. the issue is that the things that go into that socket will dissappear.

Cost isn't the issue either...More expensive than AMD, but faster too...so the cost is justified, IMHO, at the entry-level. But go with anything other than an i920, and those costs do become questionable.

Yeah.

I think the i7 920 D0 or even the i7 950 will be interesting to see.

I wonder where the 950s will land for overclocking. I mean, the 920 is the obvious choice, but I wonder if they are limited by bclk or multi. I would like to grab a D0 and see how it does, since my current C0 tops out at 21 x 191 so far (though I haven't been able to push it on my Classified yet)
