It does however allow them to run 2 markets, OEMs and Enthusiast gamers. They can crank the prices up on i7 stuff and then make the i5 stuff cheaper and slower for their OEM markets, which I would assume makes them far more money then the DIYs ever will.

I personally don't think many vendors will make boards for i5 because the Core 2 Quads will still be around for a while (and still have similar performance). There won't be much market for i5 if the i7's keep going down in price.

It is stupid for them to make two sockets. A simple rebrand for the i5 architecture would have been better.

You do realize there has always been two sockets for Intel for the last few years right?

Socket 775 and 771
Socket 1366 and whatever intel deems necessary.

the only thing that I can think of why they would do this is for the consumer , some people just want a new computer for HT or simple things so when the i5 comes out it should be allot cheaper then the i7 . but to be honest if a person only needs to use there computer for simple things then why wouldn't they just buy a 775 socket there is allot of these around and for a cheaper price then the newer i7 .

Perhaps they'll keep this new socket for the i5's, and simply upgrade, step by step, along with whatever comes to the 1366 in the future.

Y'know, with an equivalent 'mainstream' core proportional to the enthusiast cores.

Such is the state of the world of processors, right now.

As far as I know, from everything Ive read this is false; Just because a chip is budget 'shouldnt' mean it cant OC.

Hell, look at those Pentium 2x00's and 4x00's. They were all the rave in the OCing world for a while. 60 buck chips clocking up (and preforming at) 200 buck chip levels.

I heard a few times that intel would actually lock overclocking entirely, not that the chips were bad oc'ers. We'll see I guess.
