Well, it is the mainstream version. I'm sure it's locked up tight as far as multipliers and such.

As long as it's suitably cheap for its crippled speed, I can't find a reason to complain.

What do you mean?

I wasn't aware that X58 applied to AMD in any way at all.

AMD is supose to be sticking with AM3 for a while as thats their new platform, and I doubt we will see anything like 32nm from them till next year so I doubt the AM3 will go away untill then.

I guess if they can price that i5 around the same as a Q8200 it would probubly be a decent cpu, id like to see what kind of multipliers its locked at.

The i5s are going to connect using DMI (which is what the x58 uses to connect to it's southbridge) instead of QPI, which is why they have a different socket and chipsets.
Personally, I think i5s are sort of redundant too. And will likely confuse consumers with yet another socket. I know DMI is cheaper than QPI to implement (it's essentially a PCIe link), but does it really save that much money?

I'd like to think that AMD learned something from the forced migration to the AM2 platform from S939 and that AM3 will be with us for quite some time. In fact, I'm willing to bet my next big platform switch on it.

i7 Blows the AM3 platform away in everything but price vs performance right now, AMD can bairly keep up with Core 2 quads. I suspect that the i5s will still be out of AM3s reach but you never know.

I have no idea what possessed Intel to release two current generation sockets within months of each other. Its a real bummer that those who jump on the i5 have zero upgrade possibilities to i7. Not a wise move in my opinion
