The flagship single-GPU product based on the RV790 is to be called Radeon HD 4890. Samples based on the RV790XT A11 are currently running at speeds of 850/975 MHz (core/memory). AMD is reportedly telling its partners that the RV790XT is expected to be around 20% faster than the RV770XT (HD 4870), and has NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 285 in its sights, for head-on competition. Additionally, AMD may force NVIDIA to reconsider its pricing, since the RV790XT is expected to be priced between US$199 to US$249, up to $150 cheaper than the GeForce GTX 285 in its current pricing. Unfortunately, one has to wait till April.

It will likely be paired with 975Mhz GDDR5 memory. By comparision, the current Radeon HD4870 (RV770) model runs at 750MHz core clock and 900MHz memory clock. Read more....

Update: We have just been informed by CJ that there will be 2 versions of the Radeon HD4890 - a standard edition and a OC edition. The standard edition will launch in mid April, with the OC Edition following shortly after by end of April.

The Radeon HD 4890 OC Edition has 1GB of GDDR5 memory onboard and is expected to perform 25-30% faster than HD 4870. It is expected to be priced at USD299 at launch.

If it really ends up having about the same performance as the GTX 285, but for $199-249 nVIDIA are really going to have to drop the price on their cards...

EDIT: I just realized... should this be in the "Press Releases & Tech News" section? Or is this section OK? heh...

Verrry interesting. But as it's still ~ 2 months away, the rumour mill seems appropriate.
"...to be priced at USD299 at launch." ?
"...RV790XT is expected to be priced between US$199 to US$249" ? (doesn't seem likely)

May be my next Graphics card. Or at least it'll drop Nvidias prices...

DisplayPort or some universal output + breakout box would be a boon.

I hope not, I have a massive dislike for breakout boxes.

mmm I hope the EK4870 blocks will fit it. It sounds like it could have the same layout as the 4870.

may have just found my next graphics card.

How is an overclocked 4870 (which the 4890 is) going to compete with the GTX 285 in terms of performance? You need more than a 30% boost to even match the GTX 285.

Lets read that article again, shall we? :blarg:

"RV790XT is expected to be priced between US$199 to US$249, up to $150 cheaper than the GeForce GTX 285"

I don't think its competing with the GTX 285... (the OC edition the one expected at $299 before you say anything)
