Reading about it Marvell claims that they did their own research, and it seems that just little bits overlap. Marvell claims that the universities method is impossible to produce with current technology.

that would be a very important point as how ~I uynderstand patents, you can only patent a specific way of doing something and not an idea
(see apple eventually losing the slide to unlock or whatever BS)

I hope they bring back the need for designs etc of how something works in order to patent it..
