Default Windows 8 will not support DVD playback natively

No DVD Playback, Windows Media Center in Windows 8? No Problem | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

Quote:
In case you didn't notice or didn't join the growing digital mob that's scratching their pitchforks against Microsoft's official blog the company announced this past Thursday that it's stripping Windows Media Center out of the shipped versions of Windows 8. Additionally, DVD playback is completely gone from Windows Media Player. Those looking to get their hands on either feature will have to purchase the Windows 8 Media Center or Pro upgrade packs.

They also took out native DVD playback from WMP and you have to unlock it by upgrading to Media Center Edition is the point really. But like the article says there are alternatives like VLC for DVD playback and XMC instead of WMC. Just kinda greasy, but what less should I expect I guess.

I wonder if they were still paying some form of royalty on the functionality?

If I had to guess, I'd guess it was related to EU requirements... must be a PITA producing all of those "K" versions of your software... that said, it also means 10 less keys for technet windows 8.... :(

DVD codecs still require licensing.

That's my thinking, and on top of that, any open source / freeware resources wouldn't be available as an option to MS.

Just strip windows media centre out of a native install like they did with internet explorer. I haven't used the piss poor media playback software in years. Winamp for music, VLC for video playback on my pc and xbmc on my htpc.

Not really seeing an issue here, it's not like most people actually use mediacenter anyways.
