It's sad to see Windows take the direction of poor usability (except on tablets) and annoy the average joe while Linux distros like Ubuntu work at ease of use while annoying its traditional audience. (although it matters less with Linux what desktop it comes with by default) Then you have OS X/IOS sitting in the clear raking in and hoarding all the dough the idiots forgot to pick up.

Maybe Microsoft can turn this into a little money maker by having the "install media player" link to a page that advertises a bunch of (paid) media centre alternatives the same way there's an install codecs page if you try playing a DVD with Vista Business.

If you can't figure out where/how to download a free program then you probably don't try watching movies on your PC anyways.

I never use WMP for DvD playback so no big deal, but it sure is disappointing in the enterprise level. I don<t think Win8 will make it in many enterprises tho, but I'm more concerned about futur releases and the options that might get trimmed.

As for the Media center, it doesn't support MKV so it's pretty useless to me.

what is new here? windows never played DVDs natively, just zap in VLC or Media Player Classic HT and you are set

Windows Vista and Windows 7 both supported DVD playback
