My System Specs

Default Sapphire demos 6gb HD7970

Radeon HD 7970 cards with 6GB

Title says it all. Curious what the benchmarks would be, and wonder what applications such a card would have. I would assume a multi-monitor setup and the like.

I don't see a use for this except for maybe 3 way crossfire 7970 running 3+ high res monitors...then it may be a factor to have more than 3gb vram (though I am sure it will be the norm in a few years).

Wow, can anyone with a 3GB 7970 chime in on vram usage?

I imagine they will make a few of these to sell to people who still read "more ram=more performance" I know way back in 2003 I saw a card with 512MB of RAM and thought "holy crap that must be fast"

More vRAM really only benefits 3 monitor gaming and potentially 2560 x 1440. The standard 1080p player will get 0 benefit going from 3 yo 6GB of vRAM on their graphics card.

2560 x 1440 will never ever use more then 2GB as proven in the 680 review, which is on top of that a more powerful GPU. And multi monitor - maybe if you'll use 3 cards together you'll hit a 3GB bottleneck, even than not sure.

I expect to see lower performance in all benchmarks except for Eyefinity.

6Gb flavour will perform slightly slower than 3GB in single screen setups, but will provide a bit of a boost in triple monitor setups.

Sure, we all know more monitors will benefit, but think of the high resolution texture packs you can use :D That's about the only benefit I can think of from 6GB is to have a nice super high res texture pack for your games on a multi monitor setup.

At these resolutions the GPU itself will choke long before that more than 3GB will be used. You'll need to have a tri-fire or so to get the 6GB benefit.
