Default 17 Thermal Paste compounds tested

A comprehensive list of thermal paste.

We tested each thermal paste after an hour of idling, then after three hours running Intelís Nehalem thermal stress-testing utility at 85 percent thermal load.

Here's where I would look for a more in-depth comparison & better testing..

I got a free tube of evga frostbite with my z68 ftw motherboard and I was considering trying it...

After looking at the reviews, I'll stick to my good old tube of noctua nt-h1

I use MX-2 I think my next tube will be Tuniq TX-4 if I can get my hands on it, I'll probably use it to reseat my GPU when I have to clean it next (Unless I decide to replace my brand new 212+)

I am not quite clear on the geek test vs the cpu cooler reviews here. Most of the reviews here have idle temp of mid 30's. But, the geek tests has idle temp of 41c (@ 2.1GHz). Mind you, I never achieved anything like the reviews here. My idle temp is around 42-45c on 3.8GHz and I always wonder if I had done something wrong, or my paste is not good enough, or my HSF are no good.

Any comments on while geek has 41c idle?

I think what you're referring to is simply that the SkinneeLabs comparison is using a liquid cooled loop while the geek test is performed using an air cooler.

The numbers aren't really comparable, except to rate the performance of various pastes relative to each other.

Sorry, I was referring to the HSF reviews here in HWC, those that use the air cooling, and most of them have mid 30c idle, altho the room temp is 20-22c, and open case.

We do our tests in a temperature controlled room rather than a closed case in order to ensure outside factors don't influence results.

For comparison HardwareSecrets does a good job as well: Thermal Compound Roundup - January 2012 | Hardware Secrets.

I was hoping the IC 7 would have performed better. Will definitely have to try out some of the better performing ones though.
