Default AMD cutting 1,400 workers

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO - Advanced Micro Devices says it is cutting some 1,400 workers as a weak computer market and manufacturing delays have hurt the world's second-biggest maker of microprocessors for PCs.
PC sales growth, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, has been anemic because of the economy and competition from smartphones and tablets.
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has struggled with setbacks, including manufacturing problems that have postponed the shipment of important new chips for AMD.
AMD had roughly 12,000 employees at the end of the third quarter, meaning the cuts amount to about a 12 per cent reduction. The layoffs and other actions are expected to save $200 million in savings in 2012.
AMD shares fell 3 cents, or 0.5 per cent, to $5.70 in extended trading, after the cuts were announced Thursday.

I can tell you that the PR / marketing team saw some cuts, that's for sure...

They would have done a marvelous job had the chips been all they said they would be.

Must have been a lousy feeling working there and keeping a "stiff upper lip" all the while knowing your new product sucked.

I am sure the yields at GF and TSMC were not helping the matter, with the missed sales of Trinity, as well as others.

I hope this does not affect the Markham employees too badly.

Oh no. I know someone on the engineering side over there. Just sent him a message hoping everything is ok.

I don't get why they didn't just ask McGuinty for another 50 million grant.

I guess I'm just bitter about AMD rolling over after getting such strong support from the Canadian government and other companies. I kind of wish they would just die and sell everything to VIA in a firesale.
