Very nice guide. Did you write it?
I was considering the x220, but just purchased the T420.

So for me:
under $1000
dedicated gfx
14" matte high res display (never ever 1366x768, that is way too small)
Expresscard/54
Infrared (for use with media remote)
eSATA
at least one _empty_ mPCI-e slot. Two preferred of course (wifi+1 or wifi+2)(I would likely have to go 15" to get two extras though :/ )
extended battery (with a power adapter port on it for fun)
trackpad disable button!
Hotswap optical drive that I can bang an HDD caddy into.

hahahaha. Yea. Not happening.

this was probably the most interesting part of the article

"HP had a nice offering with the HP Envy 14.5”, but my only concern is HP is withdrawing from the consumer market (August 2011) and what would happen if something went wrong? "

seems its elsewhere too

think i'll be watching prices on HP laptops

Indeed I did, thanks for the kinds words! Heard really good things about the T420. My only complaint with Lenovo is their lack of online support, you have to call for everything!

I did, and I bought an HP DV4-1225DX back in 2009.... the only things it needs are dedi GFX, faster CPU and a matte display.
